South Congress, or ‘SoCo’ as the locals say, is one of Austin's most recognizable neighborhoods. The walkable street is lined with local icons like Jo's Coffee, Austin Motel, and Perla's alongside luxury boutiques, vintage shops, live music venues, and some of the city's best restaurants.

Located in Austin's 2nd Street District, Bill's Oyster feels like the neighborhood seafood spot everyone wishes they had nearby. The atmosphere is lively without being over the top, making it just as good for a casual lunch as a long weekend brunch. We like settling in with a seafood tower, fresh oysters, and an ice-cold martini while watching the downtown crowd come and go. 

Tucked inside a historic post office in Hyde Park, First Light Books is the kind of independent bookstore you can easily lose an afternoon in. The cozy café serves coffee, beer, wine, and light bites, while soft jazz and comfortable seating invite you to stay awhile. It feels warm, welcoming, and distinctly Austin. 

Fleet Feet's Seaholm location is about much more than running shoes. Every Friday morning, locals gather here for one of Austin's most popular run clubs before grabbing coffee nearby, creating a strong sense of community. Throughout the year they also host races, special events, and collaborations with other local businesses, making it one of the city's best places to connect with Austin's active lifestyle. 

Hotel San José is one of South Congress' defining landmarks and feels like a hidden oasis just behind the busy street. Originally built as a motor court in the 1930s, it has evolved into a beautifully designed and Michelin Key-selected, boutique hotel surrounded by lush courtyards and a peaceful pool. Even if you are not staying overnight, it is worth stopping by to enjoy a drink within the stucco walls. 

Just 15 minutes from downtown, La Popular serves modern Mexican cuisine in a vibrant space filled with traditional artwork and contemporary design. The menu ranges from tacos and quesabirria to fresh seafood, while the laid back atmosphere feels more like a neighborhood hangout than a special occasion restaurant. It is an easy place to spend a long lunch or dinner with friends. 

If you have seen a photo of Austin, chances are you have seen Lady Bird Lake. Sitting alongside downtown, it is the city's outdoor gathering place with miles of hike and bike trails wrapping around the shoreline. Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are available to rent throughout the day, making it one of the best ways to experience Austin from the water. 

Ranch 616 has been an Austin favorite for years thanks to its lively atmosphere and unmistakable Texas personality. Neon signs, quirky décor, live music, and Southwestern comfort food create a place that is classic and fun. In fact, their slogan is “y'all bring the people, we'll bring the party!” 

Tiny Grocer has become one of our favorite neighborhood stops with locations in Hyde Park and South Congress. The shelves are filled with thoughtfully sourced local products, organic groceries, and small batch goods from regional makers. We also love stopping in for coffee or a quick lunch while picking up groceries for dinner. 

Zed's serves New Zealand style ice cream made with fresh fruit blended directly into each order, creating a texture unlike traditional ice cream. With locations on both Austin's east and west sides, it has become a favorite for families and locals. It is simple, fresh, and one of those places people happily return to again and again. 

ATX Cocina brings a modern approach to Mexican cuisine in the heart of downtown. The menu highlights fresh seafood, handmade blue corn tortillas, and an impressive selection of mezcal and tequila cocktails. One dish we always recommend is the jumbo lump crab tostada, which perfectly captures the restaurant's creative yet approachable style. 

Baldinucci combines Roman tradition with New York style pizza, creating some of our favorite slices in Austin. Their dough is made with imported Italian flour and slowly fermented, resulting in a crisp, airy crust. The display case filled with freshly baked pizzas gives the restaurant an old school Italian feel that stands out.
